For specialised work at college level and beyond, every engagement begins with a detailed consultation with the student, from which we draw up a full job specification: the background to the role, the role of the tutor, and the desired tutor profile including their precise field and sub-field, and when required the specific institution.
That specification then defines a bespoke headhunt. We approach academics, practitioners and specialists directly, drawing on our own networks within colleges and professional bodies, to find the individuals most qualified for that particular brief. Candidates are interviewed and assessed against the specification before any introduction is made, and we present a shortlist with a clear account of what each brings to the role.

Undergraduate college tuition
College teaching is delivered to cohorts, and the individual attention available to any one student is limited. Furthermore, courses often assume a level of initial knowledge and technical skill which a student may not be entirely comfortable with or practised in. A capable undergraduate can therefore find themselves quickly behind in a course that moves faster than they can consolidate it, or working from lecture notes that assume knowledge they were never taught.
The structure of a college degree creates its own difficulties. General education and distribution requirements oblige students to take courses well outside their intended field, and a student gifted in the humanities may find their GPA determined by a quantitative or laboratory requirement outside their specialism. The introductory sequences that gate competitive majors, including calculus, organic chemistry, introductory economics and computer science, are demanding by design and frequently graded on a curve.
Continuous assessment compounds this. Grades accrue across problem sets, midterms, papers and participation from the first weeks of a semester, so ground lost early is difficult to recover, and there is no single examination period in which to make it up. Because GPA is cumulative across four years and is weighed by graduate and professional schools and by employers, a difficult freshman semester carries further than most students expect.
Witherow Brooke identifies tutors to work alongside a student's degree, whether on a specific course, a recurring area of difficulty such as quantitative methods or statistics, a distribution requirement outside their strengths, the transition into a discipline studied for the first time at college, or preparation for a repeated course. Support can equally be directed at extension rather than remedy, for a student pursuing honours, writing a senior thesis, preparing for graduate applications, or wanting to read further into a field than their syllabus allows. Graduate, professional qualifications & continued study
Our work does not end with an undergraduate degree. We identify tutors for students preparing for graduate and professional school, for those already undertaking graduate or doctoral work, for adults retraining or entering a new discipline mid-career, and for clients who wish to study a subject seriously for no reason other than that it interests them.
This includes preparation for graduate and professional admissions tests such as the GRE, GMAT, LSAT and MCAT; support with coursework, research design, statistical method and thesis or dissertation writing at master's and doctoral level; preparation for professional examinations including the CPA, CFA and bar examinations; technical instruction for those who need working fluency in an unfamiliar field; advanced language tuition; and private tuition in subjects such as history of art, philosophy, literature, mathematics or music, taught at whatever level the student wishes to reach. Where a client's schedule requires it, tutors can travel or work to an irregular timetable.

Gap year tuition
Although not as popular in the US as in Europe, an increasing number of US students are now considering taking a gap year between high school and college. A gap year is the longest period such students will ever spend away from formal study, and it falls immediately before the most demanding academic work they have yet attempted. Handled well, however, it is an opportunity to arrive at college better prepared than the peers who came straight from high school.
Witherow Brooke identifies tutors to work with students across the gap year, in whatever form the year takes. For some this is a structured programme occupying part of each week alongside travel or employment; for others it is a concentrated period of study before the semester begins. We can identify tutors for full-time academic support roles, as well as devise an online homeschooling programme of study, or flexible hourly tuition. Where a student is travelling, a travelling tutor can accompany them, or a tutor can work online around an itinerary. For students requiring additional support we have a dedicated SEN tutor service.
The most valuable work at this stage is usually preparatory rather than remedial. A student can read into their intended major seriously before it is graded, close the gap between their high school record and what a first-year course assumes, or acquire something their degree will demand but never teach, such as the calculus a quantitative major expects, the coding a science degree assumes, or reading fluency in a language required for a course's primary sources. For students entering a competitive introductory sequence, arriving already familiar with the material is the most reliable protection a first-semester GPA can have.
We also work with students whose gap year is not by choice. Where a student is reapplying, taking a deferred place, transferring, or returning to study after a leave of absence, a specialist tutor can address both the academic ground and the application itself. Our tutors are experienced in US college and UK university admissions, and in advising on how a deferred or repeated application is best presented.
For students taking a gap year before a course with an unusually steep beginning, including pre-med, engineering and the sciences, we can identify tutors who have completed that course themselves and know precisely what the first year assumes.

The services we offer
The same search process supports several different kinds of engagement, and the right one depends on how much of a student's time the work needs to occupy and where it needs to happen.
Academic Support is our principal service at this level. A dedicated tutor works alongside a student's degree or course over an extended period, whether across a full academic year or a single term, providing consistent supervision in their field. Because the same specialist sees the whole arc of a student's work, they can identify where understanding is fragile before assessment, and hold a student to a standard their institution may not have the capacity to enforce.
Full-time tuition suits students whose circumstances call for concentrated work: an intensive period before finals or a defence, preparation for professional examinations alongside a demanding job, a gap year spent on serious study, or a return to academic work after time away. Tutors can live in where a role requires it.
Travelling Tuitoring places a tutor who accompanies a student, maintaining continuity of study through relocation, extended travel, professional commitments or a competitive sporting or performing schedule. Study continues at its proper pace rather than resuming afterwards.
Hourly Tuition offers targeted support without a long-term commitment, whether that is regular weekly supervision, concentrated sessions around a deadline or examination, or a single consultation on a specific problem.
A coordinated team of specialists can be assembled where a student's work spans more than one field, drawing on the approach behind our Online Homeschooling service. A doctoral candidate might work with a subject specialist on argument and historiography, a statistician on methodology, and an academic writing tutor on the thesis itself, with Witherow Brooke coordinating the timetable and holding oversight of the whole programme.
SEN Tuition is available at every level we work at. Support that was in place at school does not always survive the transition to university, where teaching is less structured and independent study is assumed. We identify tutors who combine specialist subject expertise with genuine experience of supporting neurodivergent students at degree level and above.

FAQs
Do you have an existing network of tutors for such roles? At this level the specialisation and expertise required means that keeping a book of tutors is not feasible. Specialised college, doctoral and professional work requires expertise in a narrow field, so rather than offer the closest available approximation, we write a detailed job specification for the individual student and headhunt against it. It takes longer, and it produces a materially better match.
How long does the search take? It depends on the specificity of the brief and the size of the field. A search for a tutor in a well-populated discipline may conclude quickly; a search for a specialist in a narrow research area, or one who must also travel or work to an unusual schedule, takes longer. We will give you a realistic estimate at the consultation stage rather than an optimistic one.
Do you work with students at any college or university? Yes. We work with students at institutions in the US, the UK, Europe and worldwide, and our tutors are selected for their familiarity with the conventions and assessment structures of the relevant system. We equally support students moving between systems, where differences in expectation around referencing, argumentation and assessment can be as significant as differences in content.
Can you help adults studying outside a formal course? Certainly. A significant part of our work at this level is with clients pursuing a subject for its own sake, whether continuing a discipline they left behind, taking up a new one, or working towards a level of understanding that general reading cannot reach. We approach these engagements exactly as we do academic ones, with a specification and a search.
