Understanding the GED
The GED is a high school equivalency credential recognised across the United States and accepted by the substantial majority of American colleges, as well as by employers and the military. It is awarded by the relevant state on the basis of four separately scored subject tests.
Those subjects are Reasoning Through Language Arts, Mathematical Reasoning, Science and Social Studies. Each is taken on a computer at an approved test centre, or online under remote proctoring where a student's state permits it, and each is scored on a scale from 100 to 200. The four subjects need not be taken together, and a student who does not pass one retakes only that subject rather than the whole credential.
A score of 145 in a subject is a pass. Scores from 165 to 174 carry the College Ready designation, which at many institutions waives placement testing and developmental coursework, and scores from 175 to 200 carry College Ready + Credit, which can convert into college credit at participating institutions. These tiers matter considerably more than the pass mark for students intending to continue their education, and they are the target we work towards.
Eligibility varies by state. Most set a minimum age of sixteen, with conditions attached for candidates under eighteen, typically requiring formal withdrawal from school, completion of a home instruction programme, or parental and district consent. A small number of states use an alternative equivalency assessment instead of the GED. We advise families on the requirements applying in their state as part of the initial consultation.
How private tuition prepares students for the GED
The students taking the GED have generally arrived by a diverse variety of routes. A student who left school early may have significant gaps in foundational knowledge. A homeschooled student may be working comfortably beyond the standard in three subjects and unfamiliar with the conventions of the fourth. An adult returning to study may command the material but have lost the habits of formal assessment. For this reason one-to-one tuition is best suited to identify and adapt to the needs of each student.
The four subjects also reward quite different preparation. Mathematical Reasoning demands secure algebra and quantitative fluency, and is the subject in which students most often need teaching to secure understanding, rather than practice. Reasoning Through Language Arts requires close reading, command of grammar and usage, and an extended written response. Science and Social Studies test the interpretation of passages, data and sources far more than recalled content, and are frequently more approachable than students expect once the format is familiar.

FAQs
Will a GED be accepted by colleges? The great majority of American colleges and universities accept the GED. That said, acceptance and competitiveness are different questions. At selective institutions, admissions committees assess a candidate on the whole application, and a GED on its own provides less evidence than four years of graded coursework. Applicants to selective colleges are therefore usually best served by corroborating the credential with strong SAT or ACT scores, Advanced Placement examinations, or college coursework. We advise on this candidly at the outset rather than after an application has been submitted.
Is the GED the right choice for a homeschooled student? Often, though not always. Some homeschooled students need no equivalency credential, since many colleges admit them on a portfolio, transcript and test scores. For others, particularly those applying to a wide range of institutions, or applying from outside the United States, an externally verifiable credential removes an obstacle. The decision depends on where a student intends to apply, and it is worth taking before a preparation programme begins rather than during it.
How long does GED preparation take? It depends entirely on the student's starting point. A student who has recently been in full-time education and is academically secure may need only a month or two of focused preparation, largely on format and timing. A student with significant gaps, or one who has been away from formal study for several years, should expect several months. Because the subjects can be taken separately, preparation need not conclude all at once, and we generally sequence the subjects rather than working towards a single date.
What if my child does not pass a subject? Only that subject is retaken; the others stand. Policies on retake intervals and fees vary by state, and typically a waiting period applies after repeated attempts at the same subject. In practice, a well-prepared student who has been assessed diagnostically before sitting is unlikely to be in this position, which is a substantial part of the argument for structured preparation.
