A family sought an exceptional STEM-focussed homeschooling tutor for their academically gifted 15-year-old son. Already achieving straight A's and working towards AP-level content, the student had moved from a traditional school to a tailored programme delivered by a rotating group of online specialists, and the family now wanted a single in-person tutor to lead his education, with an eye towards college entrance as well as broader educational and vocational ambitions. Highly capable with his hands and with a practica mindset, the student combined strong reasoning ability with inattentive tendencies, which affected his stamina for extended reading and independent academic work.

Role of the Tutor

The tutor designed and delivered a full curriculum, identifying and closing gaps in the student's knowledge while advancing him through age-appropriate US curriculum material and AP-level Physics, Precalculus and History. Particular attention was given to building reading concentration, improving efficiency in completing assignments, and developing exam technique.

Alongside core academics, the tutor curated extended project-based work in physics, anchored in the student's own interests in fishing and the outdoors. The programme also built practical and conceptual grounding in coding and computer science, with an emphasis on logical thinking, independent learning and adaptability.

The tutor taught approximately 15 hours per week, Monday to Friday, with a further 5 to 10 hours of curriculum development and marking, and coordinated the timetable and progress of the remaining online specialists, including the student's language tutor.

Tutor Profile

A tutor with a strong background in the STEM subjects was found, with expertise in  Mathematics, Physics, Computer Science, and Engineering, as well as a good degree from an Ivy League college. His experience teaching US History was in addition highly desirable, as was previous tutoring roles including project-based learning and with students with attention and processing speed differences.

Outcome

The student's reading stamina and independent writing improved markedly over the year, with homework completed in a fraction of the time it had previously taken. Structured exam technique work translated into strong AP results across Physics and Precalculus.

The extended field projects proved the most transformative element. By the end of the first year the student was setting his own research questions, sourcing his own reading, and had begun a self-directed ecological project. The family renewed for a second year.
