The IB Middle Years Programme is designed to develop broad, concept-based understanding across eight subject groups, typically from Year 6 or Grade 6 through to Year 11 or Grade 10, laying the groundwork for the Diploma Programme or other post-16 qualifications that follow. Rather than testing recall through terminal exams, the MYP assesses students against detailed subject-specific criteria, asks them to make connections across disciplines through concept-based, inquiry-driven units, and culminates in the Personal Project, a substantial piece of independent, self-directed work completed in the final year.
At Witherow Brooke, we offer different services to support MYP students. Homeschooling for IB MYP Students
Witherow Brooke provides specialist full-time, in-person home tutoring worldwide for students working through the IB Middle Years Programme, whether across the full five-year programme or a shorter, more intensive period.
Every student is unique, and so is every family's situation. That's why we have a bespoke recruitment and matching process for every full-time or intensive tuition role. This process carefully identifies tutors who are best suited to each student's subject requirements, learning style and personality, ensuring students are paired with professionals capable of delivering a broad, concept-based education across the MYP's subject groups to an elite standard, best suited to the individual needs of the student.
Given the breadth of subjects the MYP requires, a primary in-person tutor may be supplemented with subject-specialist tutors across particular subject groups, either online or in-person depending on the family's location. FAQs
When should a student start MYP tutoring? This depends on the student and family's requirements. Some families engage support from the early years of the programme to build strong foundations and study habits across all subject groups, while others prefer targeted support closer to a specific unit, the Personal Project, or the transition into the Diploma Programme or another post-16 pathway. Both approaches can be highly effective when tailored to the student's starting point.
Can a single tutor cover all of my child's MYP subject groups? Occasionally, particularly in the earlier years of the programme where content is less specialised, but the MYP's breadth across eight subject groups, spanning sciences, mathematics, languages, individuals and societies, the arts, and physical and health education, means most students are best served by a coordinated team of subject specialists rather than one generalist, especially as they progress through the programme. Witherow Brooke builds and oversees this team so families retain a single point of contact for their child's overall progress.
How is the MYP different to the IB Diploma Programme, GCSEs or A Levels? Unlike the Diploma Programme, GCSEs or A Levels, the MYP is assessed almost entirely through internal, criteria-based assessment rather than terminal exams, and spans five years rather than two. Its focus on concept-based, inquiry-driven learning and interdisciplinary connections, culminating in the Personal Project, means MYP tutoring is less about exam technique and more about building sustained subject depth, independent thinking and research skills.
How can a tutor help with the Personal Project? A tutor experienced with the MYP can guide a student through selecting a viable and genuinely engaging Personal Project topic, developing a realistic goal and timeline, and structuring independent research and a supporting report, as well as helping them reflect against the project's assessment criteria, much of which is unfamiliar territory for students at this stage.
Is online or in-person tutoring better for MYP students? This depends on the family's circumstances. Online subject specialist tuition offers access to a wider pool of expertise across a student's full range of subject groups and works well alongside a primary in-person tutor, while full-time in-person homeschooling suits families wanting a single, consistent presence overseeing the whole programme.
