What Is the 8+?
The 8+ is an entrance assessment used by many selective independent preparatory and junior schools for entry into Year 4. Children usually sit the assessments in January of Year 3, at the age of seven or eight, although timelines vary by school.
The format varies between schools. Most assessments include written papers in English and mathematics: comprehension, creative or descriptive writing, spelling, grammar and handwriting on the English side, and arithmetic, written methods, word problems and problem-solving on the mathematics side. When should we start 8+ preparation? Many families begin working with an 8+ tutor in Year 2 or at the start of Year 3, allowing English, mathematics and reasoning to be strengthened gradually over roughly twelve months. Children who sat the 7+ often continue with lighter, steady support through the intervening year rather than stopping and restarting. The right timing depends on your child's current stage of learning, the schools you are considering, and the format of the assessments they will sit.
Does my child need an 8+ tutor? Not every child requires tutoring. However, the 8+ frequently offers fewer places than the 7+ or 11+, and the assessments ask for skills that Key Stage 2 does not always develop at the pace required, particularly reasoning and extended writing under timed conditions. My child sat the 7+ without success. Is the 8+ worth attempting? Very often, yes. A year makes a considerable difference at this age, and children who were not quite ready to show their ability at six frequently perform strongly at seven or eight.
