England, at the family's residence.
Location
Homeschooling
Category
Background
A family sought a temporary tutor for their bright 5-year-old daughter during the pandemic. The Year 1 student was an avid reader who outpaced her peer group, and the family wanted to extend her learning beyond the standard curriculum.

Role of the Tutor
The tutor taught core KS1 subjects while maintaining curriculum alignment with the student's school. They created engaging lessons incorporating creative projects and educational trips, working daily from 9:00 to 14:30 with regular breaks. The tutor also taught the student Piano.
Desired Tutor Profile
We sought an outstanding primary-specialised teacher for this role, who had an effusive and activity-based teaching style. Weekly Covid testing, a driving licence, and strong musical skills were also required.
Duration of the Role
1 school term.
Outcome
Already an advanced reader, the student made remarkable progress in literacy, advancing to reading material typically introduced in Year 3. Her writing skills developed in tandem, with her creative stories showing sophisticated vocabulary and narrative structure beyond her years. In mathematics, she mastered all Year 1 concepts and began exploring selected Year 2 material with enthusiasm and solid comprehension. The tutor's integration of creative projects and educational trips (adapted for pandemic safety) resulted in a rich education that connected classroom concepts to real-world applications. Perhaps most importantly, the student maintained her natural love of learning despite the challenges of pandemic isolation, developing greater independence and self-direction in her studies. Upon returning to school, her teachers were impressed by both her academic progress and her enhanced ability to pursue self-directed learning.
