The parents of a Grade 11 student at a US international school approached Witherow Brooke for support with AP United States History. The student had a strong interest in history and good factual knowledge, but was finding the volume of material difficult to manage and was struggling to turn what she knew into well-structured responses under timed conditions.
In particular, she found Document-Based Questions (DBQs) challenging. Although she could understand and discuss individual sources, she struggled to use them selectively to support a clear historical argument. Her essays consequently contained plenty of relevant information but did not always answer the question clearly or stay focused on the main argument.
Role of the Tutor
Witherow Brooke arranged weekly tuition with a specialist US History tutor. Early sessions focused on organising the course chronologically and thematically, helping the student identify connections between different periods rather than treating each topic in isolation.
The tutor then worked closely with her on the AP examination format, particularly DBQs and Long Essay Questions. They practised analysing prompts, developing a thesis and selecting the strongest evidence before beginning an essay. As the examination approached, sessions increasingly incorporated timed writing and practice papers, with detailed feedback used to identify recurring weaknesses.
Tutor Profile
We selected a History specialist with extensive experience teaching AP United States History and preparing students for College Board examinations. The tutor was chosen for their strong knowledge of American history and ability to teach historical argument and essay technique alongside the course content. Their patient and encouraging manner was also a good match for the student, who responded particularly well to discussion and being given the confidence to develop her own ideas.
Outcome
The student became considerably more confident in approaching unfamiliar essay and document questions, while developing a more structured understanding of the course as a whole. She ultimately achieved a score of 5 in the AP United States History examination.
