Category
A family sought intensive preparation for their ten-year-old son ahead of the 11+ entrance examinations for a group of highly selective independent schools. Bright, conscientious and naturally talented in Mathematics, he faced challenges with his written English and working under timed conditions. The family were conscious that his school's own preparation, while thorough, could not address his individual gaps in a cohort setting.

Desired Tutor Profile
An experienced 11+ specialist with detailed knowledge of the entrance requirements and house styles of London's leading independent schools. The candidate needed the academic credentials to stretch a capable student, the diagnostic skill to identify specific weaknesses quickly, and the temperament to build confidence in a child who found pressure difficult. A further interest in ecology was desirable as this was an area of particular interest for the student, and could take advantage of the spectacular countryside around the family home.
Role of the Tutor
The tutor delivered a structured programme across English, Mathematics, verbal and non-verbal reasoning, working in close alignment with the school's own scheme of work but stretching the student where needed, including working under exam conditions. Sessions on three weekday evenings addressed skills incrementally, with one longer weekend day given over to full mock papers, timed practice under examination conditions, as well as project-based work outside of the curriculum which most piqued the boy’s interest. The tutor maintained regular contact with the boy's school teachers, ensuring that classroom targets and tuition objectives reinforced one another.
Duration of the Role
One full academic year, comprising three weekday evening sessions and one full day each weekend.
Outcome
The student's progress across the year was substantial. His written English developed the most markedly, the student adding structure and clarity to his essays, along with his own distinct voice. In Mathematics, the tutor taught the student a number of different techniques such that his speed of calculations and algebraic manipulation increased, and he was able to check his work using diverse methods to make sure he had not made any errors. Non-verbal and verbal reasoning papers were regu;arly practiced, becoming an area of particular strength for the child, further building his confidence. Equally significant was the change in his relationship with examination conditions. The weekend mock papers, initially a source of considerable anxiety, became routine, and by the final term he approached timed papers with composure rather than dread. The tutor's coordination with his school ensured that classroom work and tuition pulled in the same direction throughout, something the family credited as central to his progress. He sat for four schools and received offers from three, including his first-choice top-tier independent school, where he took up his place the following September.
