Current vacancy

Architecture University Tutor & Mentor

Background to the role

A second-year Architecture student at a university in the UK is seeking an exceptional online tutor, mentor, and advisor with expertise in the technical and engineering aspects of architecture to provide ongoing academic support, feedback, mentorship, and guidance throughout her degree programme.

The student demonstrates strong capability in the design and creative elements of her course, showing natural aptitude for the conceptual and aesthetic aspects. She is less confident with the technical components of the programme, particularly the software skills and engineering principles that underpin professional architectural practice.

Specific areas where the student requires development include AutoCAD, Sketchup, Rhino, InDesign, and 3D printing. Beyond software proficiency, she needs support with the construction and engineering side of architecture more broadly, as well as building confidence and skill in discussing her work and defending her ideas.

The student is highly motivated to improve her technical skills and raise her work to a more professional standard. She recognises that she would benefit from more efficient working methods and seeks guidance on how to approach architectural problems with greater technical rigour.

The student comes from a Mediterranean country and so is less familiar with UK architectural design, customs and standards, and so seeks to understand the principles and ideas that inform UK architectural design specifically.

Duties of the tutor

The tutor will act as a long-term mentor, advisor, and technical guide throughout the student's degree. Ultimately the role seeks to shape the student's development as an architectural professional.

The tutor will be a guiding hand to the student in developing her projects, providing critical analysis and detailed feedback on her work throughout the academic year. This will help the student understand how her projects will be evaluated, and where improvements can be made before formal grading occurs.

A key responsibility will be guiding the student through the technical aspects of her modules, with particular emphasis on teaching efficient workflows and bringing her work to a professional standard. The tutor will also give regular lessons on the key software that the student needs to learn: AutoCAD, Rhino, Sketchup and InDesign.

Beyond software instruction, the tutor will help the student engage more confidently with the engineering and construction elements of architecture.

Sessions will be scheduled according to  the student's university timetable and the tutor’s availability. Initially, one two hour Zoom session should occur on Fridays, with another two-hour session on a different day of the week.

Desired tutor profile

The tutor should have studied Architecture at a UK university and should have a thorough understanding of UK architecture degree programmes, including the expectations and assessment criteria across different modules.

The ideal candidate will be either a practising architect or within the academia of architecture, with a strong background in both the aesthetic and structural aspects of the field. Some knowledge or expertise of civil engineering within an architectural context would be highly advantageous. Above all, the tutor must understand the standards, expectations, and assessment criteria that universities apply to student work at undergraduate level.

Professional experience in architectural practice is essential, as the student needs guidance not just in passing her modules but in developing professional-standard work habits and outputs. The tutor should be proficient in AutoCAD, Rhino, InDesign, and 3D printing, with the ability to teach these tools efficiently and explain best practices for their use in professional contexts.

The successful candidate will be an excellent communicator and mentor, able to provide critical but constructive feedback that pushes the student to improve whilst building her confidence in technical areas. They should be patient and encouraging, whilst being rigorous in their expectations and honest in their assessments.

The ability to help students develop their critical thinking and articulation skills is crucial, the tutor should be someone who can teach the student not just what to do, but how to think about architectural problems and defend her design decisions with confidence and clarity.

Furthermore, the tutor should prepare the student for work beyond undergraduate life, advising the student on career pathways within architecture, the evolving landscape the architectural jobs market, and how technology is transforming the industry.
